An Indian Daydream...
The theme for 2011 was 'The Indian Subcontinent.' The richness of religious decoration within India is so evocative that we began to look at different figures that we might take inspiration from. We decided on Hanuman; we loved the imagery and stories surrounding him, and the idea of the ape-god really appealed to our aesthetic ambitions.
We made a roughly human sized cardboard sculpture, seated on a kind of throne which could be carried by devoted servants. The sculpture began painted simply white. The idea of the workshop was to paint the sculpture and decorate it with garlands, robes, and jewellery.
There was also an option of decorating a Hanuman mask to wear
The final parade was absolutely stunning, and because lots of other gods were represented by various groups, it felt that there was a real connection between everyone's work. WOMAD 2011 was a real beauty - that sun was a-shinin' - if you missed it, you missed out! x
