Four four days Vicky and I made recordings at the local zoo - the sounds were originally taken for a soundscape called "Zoo Sounds" for Soundart Radio. It was a mix of sounds of animals, sounds of people looking at animals, and interviews with children about their days at the zoo. Some of the recordings were so enjoyable that we decided to turn a small selection into a shadow-puppetry short.
It is about 20 minutes long, and will be used in conjunction with several other shadow-shorts to form a longer showcase later in the year, called "Undershorts."
The shadow production was designed for Ausform Performance Platform in Bristol, and for that reason we decided to focus on something that we have been considering for a while: how to make very portable shadow-work with only two performers (for ease of transport, hence feasibility, in touring). For this reason the show consists of four large, light, cardboard screens which can be set up in forty seconds on an empty stage. There is a semi-visible aspect to the performing (we have normally been totally concealed by a screen and wings). A single light is wheeled from screen to screen as if touring around the zoo. It is perfect for festivals and platforms, and we would be happy to discuss taking part in such events this year.
Video/excerpts of the performance will soon be posted on the site.
